Identity of the Research Team VECT - Mare Nostrum
Identity
Based on the geographical position of the University of Perpignan-Via Domitia, the region’s historical vocation as a cultural crossroads, and the practice of dialogical thought called for by the Mediterranean (“In order to conceptualise the Mediterranean,” says Edgar Morin, “you must think simultaneously in terms of unity, diversity and conflict; you must adopt modes of non linear, dialogical thought capable of seizing both complementarities and antagonisms”), the VECT-Mare Nostrum is a federative structure originally created in 1997 out of 4 separate groups: three research centres devoted to the Mediterranean (Image and Latinity; Image and the Mediterranean; the Mediterranean and the English-speaking World) and a fourth group composed of sociologists and anthropologists who have recently joined another research center.
The following disciplines are therefore represented: Classical Studies, English and American Studies (literature, culture, linguistics), French Studies and Comparative Literature.

The VECT Research Centre aims at developing a multidisciplinary pole of research around the experience of travel and its various aspects (periplus, circulation, passage, mobility, transference, transmission, pathway, trajectory, process, ferrying, etc.) in the context of Mediterranean culture and civilisation.
